Fun At Work Is Good For Business | Sunday Special | Show 6
Hey, now I'm Dave Lorenzo.
This is the Sunday Special,
and I'm here with my number
one friend, Nicki G. Hi Nicola,
how are you? Hi.
Dave. I'm so excited to be here
on this Sunday special with you.
Yeah, it's doing great.
Just had a great day of
recording some audio podcasts.
So I'm going to start off with my,
I feel like I'm reporting
to the boss every week,
but I'm going to start off with my
reporting out to you. And by the way,
just as an aside, I feel
like I have to say it,
I'm wearing this goofy headset because
I'm testing like Nicole loves this.
I'm wearing this goofy headset today
because I'm testing out the headset we're
going to wear when we do live shows,
but I look like a soccer
announcer in Europe.
I look like an air traffic controller,
and Nico has made fun of me
relentlessly for wearing it.
These shows that we recorded today,
we recorded five of them with
me wearing this stupid headset,
and they're all audio, so you're
not going to see me wearing it,
which is a blessing, believe me.
Alright,
so my report out on the things
that we've done this week,
I think first and foremost, I want
to tell you that just tactical crap.
I discovered the sessions
that I was doing for CEOs.
They've been asking me,
a number of them have been asking me
for a workbook to go along with the
sessions.
I finally put the information
together to give them a workbook,
which will be a leave behind.
But the value to our business
I think will be phenomenal
because the workbook is all about building
value in their business so that they
can exit with more options
and if they have something
tangible that they can keep in hand.
And this is, I got a copy of a,
I'm showing Nicole now.
I got a copy of a guy's,
a workbook that another
speaker had created.
He was kind enough to share it with me.
It's like four pages.
Ours will be full of exercises
and checklists that they can use.
I will leave it behind
after I do a presentation.
The value of that will be that as they're
working through those exercises in the
room with me,
they can share it with their teams back
at the office and they'll reflect on it.
And I think we'll get
some phone calls from it.
I wrote another article that I posted
on the website that was this week,
it seems like a lifetime ago, but I
finished that up I think on Tuesday.
And it was a really good article.
And those of you who listened to the
Sunday special last week with the over and
under and the very unamused
Nicki g plain ing game with
me, that article,
the third article on the website now is
about management succession planning.
I had a great time writing the article.
I had a great time fact-checking the
article.
I write my own articles and I fact
check 'em myself to make sure they're
accurate. And I learned
a couple of things,
in fact-checking the
article that I didn't know.
So I encourage you all
to go to exit success
lab.com/articles.
You'll see the three
that we have up there.
The third one is on a
management succession plan.
It's good stuff and I
was really proud of that.
Let's see what else I have on my
list. The questions to ask a c e O.
So I did a talk yesterday.
Nicola was there on
questions to ask a c E O.
And the talk resonated with the audience.
It was all professional service providers
who don't do a good job in connecting
with or selling to CEOs.
And the point of the talk in 20
minutes was to give them seven
questions to ask themselves
to develop the right mindset,
to be able to sell to CEOs in
a way that would resonate with
the person they're selling to.
And that was incredibly well received.
Everybody really liked the info we
made that the Saturday side hustle,
which you heard yesterday.
So if you haven't heard it,
go back and listen to it Pretty good.
I was pretty happy with
the way it came out.
I'm really happy with the content there.
I'm really happy with the way the
recording came out where testing,
I tested some new technology to record
that and that seemed to work pretty well.
And then today we had great,
Nicole and I had a great session recording
a bunch of episodes for next week.
And we've decided that the episodes
that we do together one-on-one,
we're going to do audio only episodes,
which allows me to dress casually and
not shave. Nicola always looks fabulous.
I mean, whether they're
audio shows or on video,
just picture Nicola looking
fabulous all the time.
Picture me looking like
a homeless guy right now.
And then you'll have a good vision
for what this is right now today. Oh,
that's not true. I'm excited.
Not have to do my.
I got one more,
got one more thing to share with you
and then I'm going to let you in here.
And then the real breakthrough came
in a conversation that we had in the
car when I was in the car on the
way home from the event yesterday.
I left the event a lot later than you did
because I had a meeting afterwards and
there's something that we both feel
that has happened that really has got us
fired up and that's that the way
people are responding to the two of us
together. I don't know what it is and
I don't know. I mean I'll ask you,
I'm not going to speak for you,
but I'm really glad that people
are seeing the joy that I have in
working with you and the fun that
I have in connecting with you.
And the only downside is that I feel
like I don't get to spend enough
time with you because you're busy doing
other things. I don't know what you're
possibly doing,
but you're busy doing other things
and I don't get enough time with you.
And I think people really can feel how
good it feels to be working with somebody
that you like and that you
have a great relationship with.
So first I want to say thank
you for that. And second,
I want to say that I think people
are seeing it and I think creating an
environment that's fun where we
have fun and other people have
fun, I think it resonates.
I think that's part of what
we're seeing here today.
And now you can say whatever you
want to say because I'm done.
I've given you everything I got
no more left for today. It's over.
You've left it all out in the field.
That's all right. That's a good thing.
So I want to give you my
perspective of yesterday.
So let me set the stage for you
appropriately. So when Dave says,
I don't know what you're
doing, obviously he does,
he's just joking with all of us. I
have cases that are set for trial,
and so I do as much as I can.
And my weeks right now
are incredibly long.
I am beaten down and broken by the
time Friday night rolls around and
we've still got recording
to do. And frankly,
that's what I really look forward to at
the end of the week because it's really
special. And this week I was really
happy that I was able to attend the
breakfast because it was kind of up in the
air with some of the unknowns going
on in the legal world. And I am
glad I did because it completely changed
my outlook for the next few weeks,
especially when you're having a really
hard time because you've got a lot going
on as an entrepreneur. And we
both feel that a lot. I mean,
Dave travels three weeks out of the month.
Every month you're going to have weeks
where you're just completely worn down
and it's great to find sources of
motivation to keep you going through that.
And yesterday, that's exactly what
that was for me, whatever that was.
And I can't describe feeling to you, so
I'm trying to just talk through it here.
Dave and I were at the front of the room
speaking with each other and the events
going on,
and people just rushed up to us
afterwards to take pictures to talk to us.
And I don't know what is creating that,
but yesterday was something really special
and we left that event and both of us
recognized that there was something there.
And that recognition
allowed me to change my perspective about
everything I need to get through for
these next few weeks because I was
completely full of energy and so excited
about this business.
And that's why we're talking about
it here today because this is what we
are looking forward to each week is
really talking about what we've been doing
and driving this business forward.
Someone's in the front door doorbell.
It completely changed my outlook
on everything we've been doing,
yesterday's event. It is been there, but
it really opened that back up for us.
So I couldn't be more excited to be
here today talking about this because
there's something special there
and we don't know what it is yet.
We're still trying to
put our finger on it,
but we know we've got something special
that we're building here together.
And I think a lot of that
is the dynamic between us.
I think you're right. Do you need
to answer your front door? No.
Yes. Go answer your front door. Oh
God, I'm so sorry. It's all right.
We're going to keep it rolling. Go ahead.
Okay. Well.
So just so you know,
you may have heard while Nicole
is making those very kind remarks,
somebody came to the front
door of her house. I mean,
she's recording in her house, so she had
to go answer the front door. Alright,
so that's what we've got going
on. That's what we did this week.
And I want to make sure that we
highlight a couple of things.
We decided to do this show on
Sundays to kind of document the
progress that we're
making in the business.
And I think we're doing it as much
for us or more for us than we're
doing for anybody else.
And I don't even know anybody who
listens to the Sunday special.
I have people talk about shows we've
done during the course of the week.
I have people talk about
the Saturday side hustle,
but nobody's ever mentioned anything on
the Sunday special. I wanted to do this
once a week because I want us to document
this process because I think down the
road it'll be valuable for us to
share the step-by-step process,
the different feelings,
the different emotions that we've had
as we develop this business. I mean,
imagine if, like I alluded
to in a previous episode,
Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos,
imagine if they had documented their
process when they were starting their
business. Now who knows?
I don't know that our business is
going to be the size of SpaceX, Tesla,
PayPal or Amazon. God help
us. I hope it is, but I mean,
I don't know that it's going to be that,
but I think it would be
great for us to be able to,
as people who teach
entrepreneurs what to do,
I think it would be great for us to be
able to look back and have a record of
what was going on.
And I think this episode,
which is show number six
in the Sunday special,
I think maybe we'll point to
this and we'll say one day,
this is when we started feeling
something special in the business.
I think this may be this,
maybe if nothing else,
let's say this is the place
where, let's put it this way,
you want some perspective on this
show. Number one, you said to people,
the thing that everybody remarks about
is how it looks like we've known each
other for a long time.
And show number two,
when we talked about what we had
done in visors, and I said to you,
what do you think it is? And you said,
I think it's our relationship maybe
this Sunday special show number six,
overall show number. I mean,
we're up over 180 of shows
of the inside bss show
of us together. This is probably
close to the 50th show that we've done
together.
Maybe this is the point where
we figured what it is that
takes our relationship and
translates it to other people.
People see our relationship
and it's a feeling that
we have between us,
but we share that feeling with other
people and it makes it fun for them to be
around us.
And maybe we've discovered what
it is that enabled us to attract
people into a networking group
and now connect with people in a
business setting.
And I think we're just scratching the
surface as to what the possibilities are
that we can do with this.
But maybe this is the point
where we finally realized, Hey,
this is what we've got. We create
a fun environment. I think that's,
if we had to put our finger on it,
we genuinely like each other and
we like to have fun together.
We do have fun together, and we
share that fun with other people.
I think that's what it is. And
I feel the same way you do.
I've gotten you involved in other projects
that I'm doing on my own because it's
more fun when you're involved.
And I like to have fun and I do
better at work when I have fun.
You know what?
It is a lot more fun working
with people that you have
fun with and you compliment each other.
Well, I mean, I can't say that enough.
We obviously work extremely well
together. We have fun together,
so this is easy. We enjoy doing this.
This is the highlight of our week.
I do hope that we look back
at this and we're able to hear
what we were experiencing at the time.
Because if the footage was out there,
Dave,
for the building of Tesa
and Elon Musk's journey,
I'd watch every minute of it.
And I bet that they would too,
because oftentimes you hear them
well after they've hit success,
trying to describe what it was like
years back in the beginning and moving
forward.
And so having that here I think is going
to be great for us from a standpoint of
documenting not only the
journey with this business,
but also the journey with our professional
relationship and our friendship,
which always, it felt like
it was long in the beginning,
and I can't imagine what it's going to
look like when we look back on this years
from now and we're still working together.
Well, I'll give you 30 years. That's
about what I can commit to now.
I don't know, after 85, I'm
not sure where I'm going to be,
or if you're going to want to be around,
maybe you'll be spoonfeeding me oatmeal,
three meals a day to keep me going,
but I'm going to give you 30
years. That's about all I can do.
So that's all I'm going to commit
to at this point. Alrightyy, folks,
that'll do it for this
episode of The Sunday special.
It's great having you here with us.
We'll see you back here again tomorrow
for another edition of the Inside BSS
show. Until then, I'm Dave Lorenzo,
the godfather of Growth, and you are.
Nicki G.
Folks. Share the show
with other people. I mean,
we've been asking you to do
it for a little while now.
We appreciate those of you who've done it.
The only way the show grows is if you
share what we're doing here with other
entrepreneurs, good karma for you,
and you may just change the life of
another business owner or another
entrepreneur. We'll see
you tomorrow. Take care.
